Rambam - Sefer HaMitzvos As Divided for The Daily Learning Schedule Positive Mitzvah 94 |
Day 109 | Day 111 |
This is not an error of duplication. The full-fledged version of this Mitzvah are many and change for those who are learning the one/three chapter a day. The Message for the day from "Bringing Heaven Down to Earth" at the end of this Mitzvah is different than that of yesterday.Positive Mitzvah 94: Keeping a Vow
Deuteronomy 23:24 "The statements of your lips you shall keep and perform"Chani promised to take her younger sisters out to the park one Sunday afternoon. Later, her friend called and invited her to come over. She told her sisters that she would take them out the following week.
"But you promised," complained Mimi.
"You said you would," argued Bassie.
"You have to keep your word," Rina told Chani angrily.
Keeping our word is not just a good thing to do. The Torah commands us to fulfill obligations we have taken upon ourselves.
Whether a promise, a vow, or a plan to bring a sacrifice - we must make sure that it gets done.
Elijah, the prophet, rebuked his people. "How long will you walk on both sides of the fence?" He demanded. "Decide now! Either you are for the idolatry of Baal, or you are for the One Living G-d!" Now didn't Elijah think, "Just a minute! What will happen if they choose the first option? Won't it be all my fault?" No, he didn't. He knew his people better than that. He knew if they were pushed up against the wall and given an ultimatum to choose either/or, they would make the right choice. So why do we grab for the wrong things in life? Because we fool ourselves into thinking we can have it all. All the darkness and all the light in one package. We can't.
